Location History
Located to the west of the village of Weem, Castle Menzies is an imposing 16th Century building steeped in Scottish history. Paranormal activity has been frequently reported by staff and visitors to the castle and although by day it is an architectural beauty, by night it is a foreboding place which hints at it’s grisly past. Stories of torture, murder and even dealings with the devil have surrounded the castle for years, but will any of our investigators find paranormal activity linked to the dark past of the castle?
Castle Menzies is perhaps more famously known as the resting place for Bonnie Prince Charlie on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The Menzies family were evicted from the castle as punishment for his stay despite their opposition to the Jacobite risings, and only four days later it was taken over by ‘The Butcher’ - the Duke of Cumberland, and his forces in pursuit of the prince. Dark figures have been reportedly seen around the prince’s bedroom: could they be linked to the Stuart pretender to the throne?
Previous to Bonnie Prince Charlie’s stay, the castle was occupied by the troops from Cromwell’s Army, and there were gruesome rumours surrounding Redcoat soldiers staying at the castle who were supposedly tortured and fed to the dogs by the Menzies Chief after he caught them attacking his daughter. However, this story has been treated as hearsay, as the Clan would have been in serious trouble had murder of government soldiers been made public.
DEMONS IN THE WOODS
It's not just the castle itself which is rumoured to be haunted by its past. There are stories about Weem Woods surrounding Castle Menzies relating to mountain men, dragons and demons. In 655 AD St Cuthbert built the Fuaran Creig a’Chiabel (Chapel Well Rock) in the woods, where he bathed in prayer to God. It was here St Cuthbert was said to have driven out the devil himself, who had irritated him by constructing a huge bath and imitating him in prayer. He was also accused of seducing a local girl from the nearby village, was rumoured to have been responsible for her disappearance after praying for the earth of the woods to swallow up his accuser.
Location Facts
- Although the castle has stood on this site since the 1500s, it is thought it stands upon the site of two other previously destroyed castles and fortresses built by the Menzies Clan.
- A door in one room is known to close of its own accord.
- In recent years, a little girl was so affected by something she saw in one of the rooms she refused to cross the threshold and had to be taken out of the castle immediately.
