The Psychologist - Dr Rebecca Knibb

Dr Rebecca Knibb is a Chartered Psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council and is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.  She also sits on the Psychology of Paranormal Phenomena Research Group, a group established in 2008 by members of the Psychology team at the University of Derby interested in the methods and ethics of paranormal research.

As a scientist, Rebecca makes sure any investigations she does are methodologically sound and looks straight for a rational explanation behind any strange occurrence, which she will be doing as part of Paranormal Investigation: Live as the teams submit their evidence to her and Historian Ashley Cowie.  However, Rebecca considers herself to be open-minded about paranormal phenomena after a number of odd experiences she cannot explain.  As a child she would hear strange noises in an empty house, find objects being moved and even once heard her name being called when there was no one else there.   Her training as a Psychologist enabled her to question these experiences and further investigate the reasons why people would interpret these as paranormal.  In her own words, “It does not necessarily mean that the event was caused by a ‘ghost’ or ‘spirit’, more that we don’t presently have an explanation for it.”

Through her research, Rebecca believes that quite often phenomena which have been interpreted as paranormal has a rational explanation that has not been considered or has been discarded, and it is only once all scientific explanations have been examined and discounted that it can be ‘paranormal’.   She believes that Paranormal Investigation: Live will be something viewers will not have experienced before, and is excited at being able to examine any evidence the teams might find live on air!
